(This is a test.)
GFDA has the privilege of rubbing elbows with creatives of all types—from fledgling college students to some of the industry’s top brass. As a result, we consistently get invited to contribute and collaborate, but bringing projects to fruition is more challenging than you may think.
For the last few years we’ve been hungry to create with famed designer, author, artist, and fire-starter James Victore. The opportunity to do so finally happened earlier this year while GFDA Co-founder Jason Bacher was a special guest at Victore’s Dinner Series event.
During one evening, participants were confronted with the challenge of declaring a “hero statement” — a quick snippet about who they are and what they are destined to do.
As folks struggled to accept their place in their own process James turned away and rapidly scribbled on a sheet of paper. Spinning back around, he displayed his work, “Go F_ _ _ Yourself.” Immediately everyone thought “fuck?” and were somewhat shocked by his admonition. With a short pause, James then followed with, “free yourself.”
Ultimately, anything could fit into the blanks, it really doesn’t even have to be three letters. “The knee-jerk reaction is such a sad emotional default,” explains James. “We didn’t put that word in your head. You did. It’s uncreative if you both start and stop there, unwilling to consider all the other options.”
At GFDA we rally around ideas that challenge our audience and demand them to take a second look. Naturally, we jumped on the opportunity to collaborate with James to bring the concept to life.
We hope you’re as excited about this piece as we are. You can pick up the print here in our store.
Think about all the fucking possibilities. Or don’t.
